Alabama Football Podcast - College Football Talk dedicated to the University of Alabama Crimson Tide

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast break down the Tide’s disappointing trip to West Georgia, a land where toilet paper is significantly under appreciated.

Councilman Mac

Mac Jones was up to the challenge in this contest, and even with a pair of unfortunately interceptions, still delivered enough plays to lead the Tide to victory. Of note, was the leadership he demonstrated. His willingness to take ownership over the poor plays will crediting the team for the good was the right tone.

And Jaylen Waddle

Its hard to call Waddle’s performance a coming out party, but with a history of being the “and” player behind Tua’s big 3 receivers, the shoe still fits. His feats of speed were funhouse worthy.

Najee Henry?

At times Saturday Najee Harris took over the game like Derrick Henry used to do. Finishing with 27 carries for 146 yards was Henry-esque as well.

Where have you gone suffocating defense?

The personality of the Tides 2019 Defense was off the mark all season and the best of Alabama’s opponents were able to take advantage. That its so easy for pundits to assign blame is counter evidence. The litany of go to explanations, while each possessing merit, confirms the diversity of cause. Tune into the podcast for the widely overlooked nugget most likely to explain this game’s outcome.

That’s so auburn

Inexplicable ball bounces, clock management, and personal groupings…. This game had all of them and we break each down in turn. Check it out on the show.

2019 Alabama vs Western Carolina

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down the Tides Cupcake Cookoff with the Catamounts of Western Carolina

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast break down the Tide’s cupcake collision with Western Carolina

Mac the Knife

Make no mistake, Mac Jones proved that he knows how to handle the sports car that is the Alabama offense when tossed the keys. Tua he is not but averaging 27.5 yards per completion means he’s no slouch either.

Smith and Waddle

Two of the more explosive receivers you’ll ever see and I’m not omitting Jeudy and Ruggs from the equation. The crossover move by Devonta for his first score will give Catamount defenders nightmares while the burst from Waddle along the sidelines was next level.

Najee Again

Yep, just did something before half that hadn’t been done in the SEC in 20 years. So what?!

Turnover Machine

The poor Catamount quarterback accounted for 5 turnovers on the day and Alabama was pleased to make him pay.

Not a Fair Fight

Western Carolina didn’t have a chance in this game and at times the talent gap was stunning. But it was business that needed to be handled and mostly it was a clean showing.

2019 Alabama vs Mississippi State

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down the Tide’s visit to SEC neighbor Mississippi State

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast break down the Tide’s costly trip to Starkville.

Tu-ow!

In this episode we spend a healthy few minutes breaking down an unhealthy quarterback, covering the typical topics of relief over his long-term prognosis, whether he should have played, and potential causation from the prior injury. We also offer and case build a take that you simply won’t find anywhere else.

Mac Please!

Naturally the quarterback discussion shifts to Mac Jones and his readiness to take over the reins.  We land on a forecast that should be pleasing to Alabama fans across the board.  Plus, a bonus head scratching observation regarding the quarterback position.

Again with the Najee

The lead running back is always going to be a topic on the show, but Najee is taking this to new heights. At this stage its cliché to simply say he’s improving each week – that take is so week 6 – so we attempt to redefine the nature of what we’re seeing and underscore its significance moving forward this season.

D-Line Merry-Go-Round

Not sure if this is a merry-go-round or a tilt-a-wheel, but the pecking order along the defensive front is head over heals for the upcoming game with the Catamounts. If you’re looking for future stars across the front, here’s your sneak peek.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down the Tide’s heavy weight matchup with LSU

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast break down the Tide’s seemingly annual game of the century with LSU

That Sucked, but…

Of course, losing is no fun and yes, LSU looked unstoppable at times. But there were some positive takeaways from this game too. Rallying from 20 down to make it a 5-point game, explosive big plays to keep it close, and – albeit thin – a real life chance to win eek out a win in the end. There were enough correctible mistakes in this game, while bittersweet, to bode well for this squad down the season’s final stretch.

Tua Hot and Cold

Saban’s word choice was spot on in labeling Tua a warrior in his post game comments. Battling through injury, soreness, and rust, Tua put up numbers worthy of a win. However, those same factors contributed to a handful of plays that contributed to the Tide’s undoing.

Najee’s Emergence

Over the last several weeks we’ve discussed the development of running back Najee Harris and Saturdays’ contest with LSU represented an arrival of sorts. Registering personal highs for longest run and most yardage in a game, Najee demonstrated both patience and explosiveness. One can almost imagine Alabama winning outright had Najee received 10 more carries on key second half drives. Such was the level of mastery demonstrated by Najee on the day.

Defensive Posture

Alabama tinkered with its Dime formation Saturday again LSU with mixed results. Of course, 25 missed tackles will mix anyone’s results.

We’re talking Playoffs?

Ah, thank you Jim Mora, that never gets old.

But yes, we are talking playoffs, and while the Tide is officially on the outside looking int. there are paths to reversing that fortune. While obviously the LSU game hurt the Tide’s chances, it also contains the seeds for hope. The explosive strike to pull back to within five, an on sides kick effectively deciding the game, the rally, and the underlying injury and rust contributing to arguably uncharacteristic play. Its not a lock, but you could do worse than defaulting the Tide to the 4th seed.

2019 Alabama vs Arkansas

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down the Tide hosting Arkansas for Homecoming

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast break down the Tide’s Homecoming celebration featuring the Hogs of Arkansas.

Mac is Enough

In his first career start, backup quarterback Mac Jones proved that he was more than capable of leading the Tide’s offense. Driving for scores on 7 of his 8 possessions, including 5 touchdowns, Jones demonstrated poise and a strong arm.

Injury Rotations

Several key performers left the game early due to injuries, but that’s only half the story.  With limited exception, most of those players could have returned the field if needed. However, at least against Arkansas, they were not needed and their backup performed admirably.

Tight Ends Everywhere

Alabama featured seven tight ends on the night. Somehow that has to be a record.

End Game Peaking

As outside linebackers Terrill Lewis and Anfernee Jennings continue to round into form while regaining confidence in reconstructed limbs, the Tide pass rush too becomes more formidable. A combined six QB hurries and three pass deflections harken to Saban’s MO of affecting the quarterback.

Special Teams Mixed Bag

A couple bone headed decisions mixed in with solid kicking and a worthy second outing for punter Ty Perine made for sound but mixed day for teams.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down the Tide’s annual Third Saturday in October rumble with the Volunteers of Tennessee

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast break down the Tide’s first night game of the season featuring the Tennessee Volunteers.

Tua’s Injury

Interesting discussion here on Tua’s injury and exactly how, or more to the point, why it happened. You’ll just have to tune in for this one.

Mac Jone’s Ascension

The Tide offense continued to produce, though not quite so prolifically. Given a week as the man in charge and we expect Jones will rise to the occasion.

Ground Game

Each week we find more to like regarding Alabama offensive line and running game, and this week did not disappoint. Center Chris Owens returned to the field from a knee injury that sidelined him last week but he returned to a new position and number. This speaks not only his versatility, but also to Alabama’s depth across the front. Meanwhile, Najee and Brian continue to consume both clock and yardage with increasing appetites.

Defensive Front

Alabama played more defensive lineman Saturday with the game still on the line since perhaps 2015. This too is a positive sign at the Tide continues to bolster itself for the season’s homestretch.

Quad Tryouts

While not quite an open kicking competition on the quad, Saturday’s contest featured a new Alabama punter. And not just any new punter, but a walk on who immediately made a big impression.

2019 Alabama vs Texas A&M

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down the Tide’s visit to College Station

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast break down the Tide’s 2019 visit to College Status to take on the Aggies of Texas A&M.

Offensive Line

No one roots for injury, but such is the cause for the latest, and perhaps best, edition of the 2019 offensive line. Dieonte’s return from suspension created a need for someone to make a hole, and unfortunately that came in the way of a Chris Owens knee injury. While we certainly hope for a swift and full recovery for Chris (to round out the deepest Tide line in recent memory), shifting Landon to center, enabling Evan Neil and Deonte to man the guard spots, does create a formidable interior to go with perhaps the best tackle tandem in the conference.

Running Game

As the Tide line improves, so too does the Alabama running game. But as we discussed on the podcast, the dependency is not wholly on the shoulders of the line. The backs themselves are running with greater discipline and tenacity, taking fuller advantage of what the line has to offer. In other words, both parties are elevating their contribution, which should allow the Tide ground game to improve.

Tue and the Receivers

I wish my ‘off’ days were so productive.

Depth on the Defensive Front

Saturday brought early playing time for a pair of Alabama defensive linemen. This is a good sign, as younger players are able to steal snaps earlier in games, the starters will be fresher later. This is a requirement for late season success.

Special Team

Special Teams coordinator Jeff Banks, formerly of TAMU, may have had a little extra motivation this week and it certainly showed in the performance of his troops. Explosive return and coverage teams contributed to outstanding field position for the Tide all day, while chipping in a touchdown for good measure. But not all elements came up roses, tune in for more.

2019 Alabama vs Ole Miss

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down the Tide’s record setter against Ole Miss

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast break down the Tide’s 2019 Home Conference opener against Ole Miss

Tua, DeVonta, and Forristall?

Tua continues to rewrite the Alabama record books and Smitty writ his name as well, catching five of Tua’s incredible six touchdown passes on the day. For what promises to be a good trivia question one day, amongst all the pass catching talent on the roster, it was tight end Miller Forristall corralling Tua’s sixth scoring toss.

Running Game

The offense line is improving, the running backs are finding their lanes, and Dieonte Brown is back in action. It may not happen overnight, but the running game is on the right track.

31 Points Allowed, No Problem

Allowing Ole Miss to score 31 points certainly leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but its also not a reason for panic. Check out our breakdown of why this not the harbinger you’re looking for.

2019 Alabama vs Southern Miss

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down the Tide’s nooner with Southern Miss

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast break down the Tide’s 2019 JP throwback game against Southern Miss.

Tua Outstanding, Again

Tua registers yet another five TD day in what appears to be a full on assault of the Alabama record books. Let’s make a point of enjoying the remaining games with Tua at the helm.

Najee Inspired

Though lacking the highlight hurdle, Najee may have logged his best day running the ball in Alabama’s offense. He hit his holes hard and followed his blocks all in registering a 100 yard day on the ground. For good measure, athleticism and play design led to one of the easiest touchdowns the Tide will score this season.

Offensive Line

In a related story, the Alabama offensive line submitted its best performance of the season. Fielding a unit with three starts on the season surely contributes to the continuity factor, as does the individualized pressure of safeguarding a seat knowing the music on Deonte Brown’s suspension is about to run out.

Where’s Slade

In what may become a weekly segment, we introduce and breakdown the myriad Slade Bolden sightings from Saturday.

Defense Gelling

It’s happening… kinda quoting my own post game Facebook post… but did you notice the relative ease and comfort with which the Tide stop squad performed? The youngsters are growing and developing each week partially due to simplifications in the play calling and partially due to and aggressive learning curve.  With the rotation in the secondary calming down and depth emerging long the defensive front – looking at you Barmore – this unit promises to improve each week.

2019 Alabama vs South Carolina

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down the Tide’s road win over South Carolina

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast break down the Tide’s Conference opener against South Carolina.

Tua Outstanding

What may be lost in the angst over poor tackling and an unsteady rushing attack is the performance submitted by Tua. Never in Alabama history has a quarterback registered 400+ yards and five touchdowns in a single outing. That Tua sat out most of the 4th quarter only magnifies the feat.

Najee and Brian

On a day that saw one Alabama running back deliver a play for the ages, at least one podcaster believes the day also marked a changing of the guard at the position. Tune in for the discussion and watch item.

OL Pressure

The pressure is on this week for the internal offensive line. Check out why we compare this week to a contract year for the men in the middle.

Another week and another mixture of players in the Alabama secondary. While still bullish on the unit, the podcast team discussers whether its time to settle on a rotation and move forward.

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast break down the Tide’s Home Opener Against New Mexico State.

Offensive Line

Landon Dickerson assumed duties at Center, putting five players with experience playing tackle across the front. An athletic lot to be sure. However, the Tide still struggled at times to move the line of scrimmage. How does Saban really feel about this and how/when do we expect this to improve?

Manufactured Run Game

Despite struggles moving the line of scrimmage, the Tide still surpassed 300 yards rushing. Of course 149 of those game on two plays and the top backs combined for a solid day’s work.

New Look Secondary

Alabama opened the game in dime personnel, not a big surprise against a component who passes 70% of the time, but the unit’s composition drew our attention. True freshman Jordon Battle teamed with reserve Daniel Wright to man the safety positions, creating a ripple that saw Jarod Maydin at Star and Patrick Surtain ll back at corner with Josh Jobe and Shy Carter observing from the sidelines. This grouping placed 4 safety-types on the field whereas the prior week’s starting dime consisted of 4 corner-types.

Offensive Line– We step through the potential starters and explain why this could be one of the deeper and more athletic lines to take the field at Alabama.

Running Back – Brian Robinson is why the uninitiated don’t understand Alabama. He’s also a name to know if it comes to offensive difference makers for Alabama in 2019.

Linebackers – One hot take didn’t age well but the point remains. Alabama will field a young but athletic mix of linebackers. But the injury bug needs to leave this position alone.

Tight Ends – The Tide’s thinnest position where contributors may emerge from the unlikeliest of places. Also, at least one nod to one of the Tide’s best at the position.

Defensive Front – The Tide will field note worthy front line but will rely on some fast-developing youth for this unit to deliver.

Wide Reivers – Perhaps the deepest and most talented bunch to every wear the Crimson and White. Enough to wear down even the sturdiest of secondaries.

Secondary – An amazing array of returning and developing talent. Easily the strength of the defense and a day one contributor.

Quarterbacks – The story here is the early preparations for 2020’s competition for the starting job.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down 2019 National Title Game

2019 Championship Game Alabama vs Clemson

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s disappointing outing in San Clara against the Clemson Tigers

Not What We Had in Mind

While I’m certain much of the college football world was pleased to see Alabama get their tails thumped, the honest ones will admit to not expecting it. Not to subtract from Clemson’s talent and performance on the field, the Tide’s miscues weighed heavily in this contest.

Tua logged only six interceptions on the season and the two against Clemson were promptly cashed in for touchdowns. Alabama fans, as frequent beneficiaries, will attest little good can come from spotting a quality opponent 14 points.

Likewise arm-chair quarterbacks, regardless of affiliation, will universally expect a team to, almost by accident, register more than 9 points when given five separate trips inside their opponents 22, with three reaching Clemson’s 3-yard line or better.

Alas, such observations, without regard to their accuracy, are only taken as sour grapes so for the purposes of this report we’ll move on. But if you wish to indulge this line of thought further, then you must check out our game wrap up show.

Lack of Depth Catches Up

Depth across each level of the defense was a concern leading into the 2018 season. The starting three defensive linemen featured a new starter and little proven depth. While the outside linebacking corps was deep prior to injuries, the middle ‘backers were paper thin. And the secondary was replacing all six players from the 2017 dime package. This too before injury struck.

Clemson, a team skilled and deep enough to take advantage, did just so. Injured pass rushers conspired with an overmatched secondary to create a buffet of passing opportunities for the Tigers wunderkind QB.

Ultimately, the Tide’s misfiring offense pared with a gracious defense made for a long night.

Players Leaving

As is an annual ritual, several Alabama players are electing to forgo their senior seasons in chase of NFL fortunes. While all departing players will be missed, some may be better prepared than others for the jump. We offer a couple bold opinions on who may be making the best or worst decisions.

Coaches Moving On

Similarly the Tide coaching staff is frequent target for promotion and pillage and the 2018 staff is no exception. Here again, some exits are logical and others less so.

Gone So Soon

And so another college football season is in the books. I am forever reminded of the laments of the late, great Beano Cook.  We wait so long for the season to arrive and then it goes so fast.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down 2018 Orange Bowl aka, Playoff Round 1

2018 Orange Bowl Alabama vs Oklahoma

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s opening round game against Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl

Ankle, What Ankle?

Leading up to the Orange Bowl a significant amount of hyperventilating coverage was allocated to Tua’s ankle along with a vertigo inducing level of ‘will he or won’t he’ style concerns over his readiness to play. A casual observer, or at least one not easily prone to the verbal gesticulations of social media, was well served as Tua marched onto the field and promptly laid waste to the Sooner secondary along with concerns over his readiness.

Smitty Who?

On the podcast we offer a unique perspective on DeVonta’s opening play, a simple slant pattern then went for 50 yards.

Contrarian View to end the Half

Similarly we discuss a take on Bama’s end of half performance… a 4 penalty affair that netted a field goal rather than a touchdown. Certainly now how you’d draw it up, but not all unraveled plans are the end of the world. We don’t fully agree here, but the discussion brings our a couple ideas you won’t see discussed elsewhere.

Defense Attacked

Strong call out of a defensive star or more of the same, which is a subtler jab on the Tide’s scheme? Sides were drawn. Whose are you on?

No-So Special Teams

The Tide specialists made the kicks they were supposed to make, except when they didn’t. While the special teams performed well on kick returns, except when they didn’t. On average, it was. Which failed to disappoint.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down 2018 SEC Championship Game

2018 SEC Championship Alabama vs Georgia

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s SEC Title Tilt against the Georgia Bulldogs

Storybook

Jalen’s performance against Georgia in the SEC Championship was borderline magical. He blended run and pass with equal aplomb, delivering on the promise many fans held for him when he first took over the position in 2016. While perhaps his development was not a straight line, all Alabama fans relished his progression on this night.

Power Formation

For the first time this season, Alabama rolled out a power run formation against the Bulldogs. As we’ve observed Tide teams in the past, this personnel group featured multiple tight and a defensive lineman (Quinnen Williams), positioned as a lead blocker.

Secondary Tacklers

As the ole saying goes, you never want a defensive back to lead your team in tackles. However, that was the outcome as 4 of the Tide’s top 5 tacklers were defensive backs. In total, 37 of 80 tackles , nearly 50%, were registered by Alabama’s secondary.

Lost to History

Such is the description we’ll use on the podcast to describe an important play but not the defining play. Jalen’s run for the go ahead score will sit within our mentals for a while, however, numerous other plays were critical in setting the stage for the winning run. Twice in this week’s show we call out qualifying plays. Tune in to see if you agree.

Special Teams

Most football fans agree with the idea that special teams can sway the outcome of a close game. Most Alabama fans circa 2018 agree the Tide’s special teams would likely be found lacking if called upon to deliver a clutch victory. However, just as special teams play can provide the margin of victory, they can also help to seal a team’s fate. This was the case with the Bulldogs as a missed field goal and inexcusable fake punt sparked a neutering of these dogs.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down Alabama vs auburn

2018 Alabama vs auburn

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s Iron Bowl smackdown over the Tigers of auburn.

Sluggish Start

We discuss the similarities between the Iron Bowl and the Tide’s recent game with Mississippi State. In both contests the Tide running game steam rolled early but was scrapped. We discuss wide ranging reasons for such a switch in attack.

Tua

The Alabama offensive war machine begins and ends with Tua and the suspect health of his balky knee. Over the last two weeks the knee has appeared healthy as the Tide’s point production can attest. We pause to celebrate the versatility of the Alabama offense and discuss how this offensive renaissance may be reshaping long standing philosophies for one Nick Saban.

Offensive Weapons

Even while affording Tua his full measure, it’s safe to say the talent Alabama possesses at the skill positions is unprecedented. Tua is simply not throwing to a bunch of busters out there. The Tide is four deep in front line wide receivers and at least three deep in proven running back talent – with apologies to future, but as yet not realized, star Brian Robinson . Add in what may be the most explosive Tide Tight End of any era and the recipe makes for a Defensive Coordinator’s worst nightmare.

New Dime

In what likely establishes a new record for talk of the state of Alabama’s Dime position, we break down 3 compelling topics for those willing to venture deep into the weeds. Jared’s penalty was legit; Keaton Anderson is the backup at Dime and is a perfect example of Saban’s playing time formula; and a very curious line up combination when Alabama went to the Dime on Saturday.

Depth

As we called out in the preseason, the Tide Defense would need to manufacture depth if it, as a unit, would contribute to the lofty goals for the 2018 squad. For the most part, this deal has paid off. When Isiah Buggs was felled early in the contest, three defensive linemen were ready for the call due to their steadily increasing roles throughout the season. Likewise, Keaton Anderson represented not only the backup at Money (Dime back), he was effectively the ninth defensive back in sequence due to a pair of in-season injuries. Both scenarios likely represent the limit of the Tide’s productive reach, yet they too are poses unattainable in fall camp.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down Alabama vs Citadel

2018 Alabama vs Citadel

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s showdown with the Citadel Bulldogs.

40 Point Half

Another thing unique about Alabama this season – there actually is a wrong half in which to drop 40 points on your opponent. Seems the first half is always the preferred half for such an explosion, but the second half will do in a pinch.

If you didn’t know, you wouldn’t know

What was all the uproar about Tua playing or not playing or being on a snap count? Turns out he’s as healthy as ever. At least that’s what my lying eyes wanted to tell me after watching him stand tall in the pocket and run with abandon when the play broke down. No knee injury here, right?

Choose your weapon

The Alabama offense is loaded as player after player stepped up to make a contribution in this game.

Fave Smith

There’s an emerging new favorite in our podcast era Tight Ends. We call remember our first and the talent show, but in the end it has to come down to productivity right? Irv Smith is the only candidate with all the bells and whistles.

Turn it Up

The Alabama defense started slow but rose to the standard in the second half. An impressive showing as the unit battled through adversity and a uniquely challenging opponent.

Trivia

You gotta tune in for this one.

2018 Alabama vs Mississippi State

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide encounter with the #Hail State Bullies.

Tua is Still Human

In what is a weekly watch item, Tua was hit and slow to get up a couple times. We discuss this and the potential conflict Coach Saban feels over his process mantra and vision of championships.

Impressive, then eh…

The Tide’s performance in the first quarter was unrivaled all season. But then the wheels seemed to come off. We discuss reasons and excuses.

Stout D

Alabama’s Defense posted another strong outing against the Bullies. We debate whether it was the stout D or the limp O.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down Alabama vs LSU

2018 Alabama vs LSU

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s visit to Baton Rouge for a tangle with some chapped Tigers.

Tua is Human

So Tua threw an interception, played in the 4th quarter, and failed to break the 60% completion percentage. That only proves he’s human – one that’s very skilled at the footballing.  Tua threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for another in leading the Tide to a 576 yard day against one of the better defensive teams in the college game.

Same as it Ever Was

Under Nick Saban, Alabama has this pesky habit of winning. The Tide’s impressive winning streak against unranked opponents (80), is only surpassed by Saban’s win total against teams ranked in the top 5 (22, most ever). That Alabama should stroll into LSU’s Death Valley like they own the place should surprise no one given the Tide’s 28-9-2 record in the joint.

Poor Planning

Give credit to Alabama’s defense for certain, but don’t overlook the ineptitude demonstrated by the Tiger offense in both their planning and execution. We spin through some numbers and plays that demonstrate, our interpretation, how the Tigers failed to put their best paw forward.

Short Bus

That Alabama continues to dominate college football with a rotating fiasco in the kicking game has to be the biggest running gag in the sport.

Lights Out

The Tide offense continues to play lights out with another record setting day. We call out a pair of touchdown plays that rate amongst the finest you’ll ever see and discuss how common place they seem to be this season.

Media Shills with Fishy Breakdowns

In what amounted to one of multiple mini rants on this week’s show, we call foul on a hot take from the broadcast crew. Was it a legit false narrative or does the Tide just run a super tight ship?

Fave TEs

We pause to rank our top three tight ends of the Podcast, er… Saban era. Spoiler alert, we have a fast riser up the board.

Defensive Excuses or Reasons

We discuss and largely explain away concern around Alabama yielding 21 points to the Volunteers. Are we whistling past a graveyard or are we correct in our measure of the situation? Reach out and let us know your take?

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down Alabama vs Missouri

2018 Alabama vs Missouri

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s Homecoming tilt with the Show-me State Tigers

College Football powered by coach Nick Saban

Injury Alert

The collective heart of the Alabama Nation skipped a beat Saturday night as Tua went down and didn’t get back up. Fortunately, the phenom was ok and reportedly could have continued playing. We break down the case and offer a theory as to how the coaching staff could have elected to handle the strained knee from the start. Any offer another for why that was never going to happen.

Injury Alert Too

A pair of wideouts also went down Saturday night and fortune favors the Tide as both appear to be alright. However, this concentration of injury highlighted the thin nature of the Alabama receiving corps. We speculate how this can be addressed and puzzle at why these steps have not yet already been taken.

Pace Changer

Was last week’s prediction correct or are we simply forcing the evidence to fit our narrative? Yes, is the correct answer.

Active Defense

The Tide defense continues to improve it’s play on the field. Check out the players we identify as key contributors to this process and explain how the improvement should only continue from here.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down Alabama vs Arkansas

2018 Alabama vs Arkansas

Put $&@% on Tape

Tua and Jalen on the field at the same time? Obvious and easy is our explanation for why this was a genius move by the Tide offensive brain trust.

Fast Paced Offense

How fast is too fast? And despite talk to the contrary, does Alabama need to insert more runs into the mix just to spell the defense?

Two Touchdown Test

A couple weeks ago we discussed the sheer number of players capable of busting out a two TD performance at any given time. Since that time, the Tide has done just that. Check out as we revisit that discussion

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down Alabama vs Louisiana

2018 Alabama vs Louisiana

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s beatdown of the Louisiana Rajun’ Cajuns.

Tail of Two Offensive Halves

We’re not sure which is more surprising. That Alabama rolled off 49 first half points for the second time this season, or that against a Sun Belt foe the Tide only mustered 7 the entire second half.

OL Shuffle

Saturday saw two offensive tackle go down. While the Tide is fortunate that neither injury was particularly serious, the AFP team discuss the backups and speculate as to how the team would adjust were the injuries to have been more serious.

Depth Watch

Alabama’s lack of depth in the defensive middle was exposed Saturday in the second half. At a time when both teams were happy to simply run out the clock, the Cajuns found life on the ground in racking up enough yards and pointes to win the second half.

Hockey Tackles

Check out the new stat we invented during this weeks’ game, along with who we believe would be the league leader were this indeed a viable metric.

Alabama vs Texas A&M 2018

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s outstanding performance against the dancing mechanics of Texas A&M.

Sir Yes Sir

Saban requested that the media look for negative topics to exploit this week and while we don’t consider ourselves media types, we placate the big boss with a rundown of topics sure to inspire motivating film study.

Leading Running Back

This Tide squad sports one of the more underrated players to ever suit up at the Capstone. We lament his less than record setting pace so far this season but laud his leadership and example – and oddly enough root for a big day and math.

Anti-Divas

Wide receivers are routinely forgiven their antics as byproducts of their diva personas. Fortunately this Alabama offense gets all the boom associated with top shelf pass catchers without all the bust.

Emerging Depth

Two of the three levels on defense are starting to conjure up some depth. Tune in as we break down the units and name names.

Donut Hole

Meanwhile, the 3rd grouping appears stuck in developmental neutral. Check out the manufactured depth we spotted Saturday and from where we most expect the missing depth to emerge.

Alabama vs Ole Miss 2018

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s outstanding performance against the Rebel Shark Bears of Ole Miss

Outstanding Offense

The Alabama offense is surely a potent attack.  The efficiently within the numbers is staggering and checkout the most amazing Tua stat to date.

Comparing Jalen to Jalen

We circle and finally agree on some common ground here. Jalen when compared to Tua invites a certain type of response. But Jalen compared to Jalen is another matter… and with impressive results.

Pick a Star and Star

As Ole Miss clearly demonstrated, planning to limit one of Alabama weapons is itself a challenge – just check out Jeudy’s stat line – but even success in such an endeavor opens the door wider for the next star to run through. A staggering number of players could be expected to post 100 yard, 2 TD lines on the regular in other programs but oddly enough, such stats may actually be harder to repeat amongst the stars on this Tide score squad.

Ole Miss Defense is BAD

Oh boy… Ole Miss did themselves no favors Saturday night. Check out our breakdown of 2 1st quarter touchdowns from a defensive scheme and execution standpoint.

Tide Secondary Comes of Age

We knew the Tide secondary would improve, but this much, this quickly? We didn’t see it coming and apparently neither did the Rebs – yes, it was a trap.

Well Sourced Play

Seeing where, who, and how the roster gaps will fill is a pass time of the podcast team. So far we’re seeing moves made and expectations fulfilled on the defensive side of the ball.

Alabama vs Louisville 2018

Starting Quarterback Identified

After all the breathless hype, the answer was as obvious Saturday night as it was seven months ago and it’s the same answer Saban provided when he specified that the Tide needed someone who could distribute the ball.

Viva Jalen

As fans this is a drama that plays out, mostly, on our TVs. But the reality is that these story lines involve real people who are as flawed as any of us. Both players want to start but one is clearly better. Saban appreciates, respects, and wants to protect both players so he pops off to the media. Welcome to humans doing human things. But that’s what makes the next chapter even more tantalizing than the last. Face it, we kinda knew how the starter story line would shake out but no one knows how the balance of Jalen’s career will play out and what foibles will be exposed in the process. But tune is as we speculate.

Receivers on Parade

The Tide’s arsenal at the receiver position was as potent as expected with even more promise in the wings.

Defense Better than Advertised

We knew the Tide defense was young, talented, and prone to giving up plays – at least early in the season. While those labels played out, check out the discussion as to why the defense out performed our expectations.

Defense Improvement Potential

Scary as it may be, the room for improvement among the defense is real. Pundits and opponents should take note.

Alabama vs Georgia 2018

In this episode Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s breath-taking performance against the Georgia Bulldogs.

Who are these guys

Well, it’s been a minute since we’ve done this but so so greatly appreciate the outreach during the offseason.  We probably have a mix of reasons and excuses to taking so much time between shows but let’s just say we fell hard into the off season.  But we’re back.

Play that led to the decision

I don’t suppose I have to explain that decision we’re referring to here, right?!? The Tide was bipolar in the first half against Georgia.  The defense while tasked with 47 plays was outstanding, meanwhile the offense could only muster 24 of their own plays. Reverse those numbers and the Tide is Rolling. But despite 70+ first half plays, there as only one that sealed the decision. Tune in and see if you agree.

 Embarrassment of Riches

Here a freshman, there a freshman, everywhere a freshman. There was a stretch in the second half where it seemed that every play was being made by a freshman. It was almost as exciting as the game itself.

2017 Alabama vs. auburn

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks down Alabama’s breakdown in the armpit that is west Georgia’s own, Jordan-Hare. Yah.

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s breakdown in the armpit that is west Georgia’s own, Jordan-Hare. Yah.

Sloppy Play

Alabama was a shade off all night on both sides of the ball, and at one stretch it seemed that everyone was taking a turn scoring a blunder. That’s not how it works. One miscue is not a call for everyone to miscue – no, I didn’t bring enough for the class.

As we step through the game we bring up several instances that are harmless individually but when strung together, they end up costing Alabama the game.

Game Planning

Check out our discussion of a tendency common in Alabama losses under Saban.

Injury Impacts

There are excuses and there are reasons, and there is a difference between the two. An excuse is to lament the weather or field conditions, a reason is the loss or diminished performance of one or more key performers.

Alabama is clearly a different team when Shaun Dion Hamilton is not on the field, simply consider the Tide is 3-2 over the last 2 seasons in games he didn’t play, with Mercer being one of the wins.

Add to that a gimpy Minkah Fitzpatrick and a trio of linebackers not yet back into playing form, and you get a defense that isn’t firing on all cylinders.

Given time, these are all correctable.

Not Sour Grapes

I’ll say this from the start… and I both know and hate how this sounds. On the podcast, its almost comical how uncomfortable I must sound talking about it…

The officiating on Saturday was abysmal. That’s not an opinion, that’s fact, watch the tape.

Calvin is tripped in coverage

Hale is held on a route

Trey Matthews simulated the snap, not once but twice

Rashaan didn’t rip Stitham’s helmet off

But I will stop short of claiming those are the reasons Alabama lost. That part was self-inflicted.

Mini Game balls

Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?

Alabama’s Next Opponent

Stay tuned, we’re all anxious to learn the particulars – who, when, and where. Meanwhile, check out our assessment of the Tide’s chances for making the playoff.

Kick After – a ‘lil nugget that didn’t make the show

I can’t explain with words how much I hate it when Alabama loses a game like this. I know this is true because I’ve rewritten these lines so many times. Doing the podcast and writing the articles at these times is just the worst.

Yet its these games that yield a unique perspective on things. Not just in the true but syrupy way that bad times make you appreciate the good times more, but in a more practical way.

Watching and re-watching and discussing a game like this allows you to spot the trends and breakdowns that add up to missed opportunities and eventually the game. It can inspire confidence when you next see the Tide play and those small items are corrected.

Here’s to hoping we get another run at this bunch of tigers, because I think we might have a little something for them next time around.

We call out at least 3 offensive players with unique skill sets that are being specifically utilized in Alabama’s play calling and talk to how this is enabling a maturation of the Tide attack.

Backing the Line

Saturday offered lots of topics related to the Tide’s linebacker corps. Check out our mixed take on Alabama’s player rotation and how this bodes for upcoming games. We also discuss the potential impacts and contributions of several ‘backers who may be close to returning to action.

Mini Game balls

Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?

Alabama’s Next Opponent

Next up for Alabama is a jaunt into West Georgia for a tussle with the Auburn Tigers. Check out our mini game breakdown.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks down Alabama’s 2017 squeaker over the Hail State Bulldogs

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s win over the Miss State Bulldogs.

Well Played

From the opening kick, Mississippi State came to play. The Bullies were armed a perfect game plan and the personnel to execute. Drain the clock, shrink the game, and pound the ball. Again, and again, and again. Some will lament State’s 172 rushing yards but they came at a pedestrian clip and only the result of a tenacity unusual amongst most Alabama opponents.

First Drive Ripple

In theory the plays run early in a game mean just as much as those run much later, but our minds are often not programed to think in those terms. So excuse those that underestimate the choke hold State’s first possession held over the entire contest. Tune into the podcast to catch our breakdown.

Jalen’s Development

We land on a simple yet compelling conclusion when it comes to Jalen’s performance in this game. You have to listen to get the goods but those who have been racking our Jalen positions dating back to last season, it may come as a surprise.

Cal’s Feat and Feet

Check out our breakdown of Calvin Ridley’s outstanding performance. Including both a big play that will be forgotten and a tendency demonstrated by Cal that limited his level of performance on the field.

Donut Hole

On Saturday the Tide defense presented a soft middle that enabled the Dogs to run and elevated a wave of concern across the Crimson fanscape. Tune in as we discuss options for plugging this gap over the coming days and weeks.

Mini Game balls

Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?

Alabama’s Next Opponent

Next up for Alabama is a (hopefully), low key affair with the Bears of Mercer.

Kick After – a ‘lil nugget that didn’t make the show

My all outward appearances I enjoyed a perfect Saturday afternoon last weekend. Barely having to move from my favorite chair, I watched the Georgia and Alabama back to back. It was perfect, except for it wasn’t.

As Georgia drove the length of the field against Auburn I was loving it and quickly became convinced that running against the Tigers would prove but a small challenge. But the mood changed as Auburn then proceeded to dismantle and embarrass Georgia. My mood soured to the point that you’d have thought I was watching Alabama get drubbed. Soured to the point I even questioned what was going on.

But there was a remedy, or so I thought. All I needed was the Alabama game to kick-off and the Tide to defy my prediction by rolling out a textbook thumping.

Alas, this was not to be either, and so it went. Until by the end of the night I was exhausted by the mere task of watching a couple ball games.

We hope you’ll check out the Podcast and in the meantime, Roll Tide!

2017 Alabama vs. LSU

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks down Alabama’s 2017 victory over the LSU Tigers

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s win over the LSU Tigers.

Turn it Up

In many regards, Alabama played like Alabama has been playing this season. However, the results were a little muted or turned down due to the caliber of the opponent. We predicted early on that LSU might be the best defense the Tide would face all season and, to this point, that proves to be correct.

The Tide still blended run and pass – with a stronger lean towards pass – and continued to distribute the ball well, with 7 players catching passes including a TE and RB.

Loosen it Up

On the other hand, Alabama played a little tight and certainly shortened the bench. Senior receivers previously seeing their roles shrink were cast into leading roles, and a running attack manned primarily by only a pair of backs – excluding a more active Jalen Hurts.

Tune into the show to see our treatment on the running game and perhaps our single largest surprise when it comes to how the backs were deployed.

Depth Watch

Yet again Alabama fans had to watch as three significant defensive contributors were forced out of the game due to injury. This is in addition to at least 3 players already lost for the season.

Check out our breakdown as to how the Tide can overcome the loss of 4 linebackers down the stretch.

Underrated

Ever wonder who might qualify as the most underrated 1st round draft pick is on this year’s Tide roster? Then you’ll want to catch this discussion.

Mini Game balls

Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?

Alabama’s Next Opponent

Next up for Alabama is a visit to Starkville for the always tough Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Kick After – a ‘lil nugget that didn’t make the show

I’ll spare everyone the elaboration, but suffice it to say that LSU fans really don’t like the whole corndog shtick, which personally makes it all the more fun.

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s smoking of the Tennessee Volunteers.

Offensive Progression

Bit by bit, as if according to a grand design or plan the Tide offense continues to introduce new wrinkles into the game plan. In recent weeks we’ve observed more two back sets and fewer designed runs for Jalen. On Saturday the Tide worked the ball more to the Tight Ends over the middle of the field. On the show we discuss this development and talk to each new dimension not so much building upon an existing facet as adding another capability to the offensive matrix.

All Beef Package

The Tide attack seems to have added even more protein to the goal line package as two DLs and a 6th OL rotate in for the three WRs that would round out a more traditional 11 personnel grouping.  This leads to the rarely observed extra beefy 32 package.

Dominating Defense

Alabama held a maligned Volunteer squad to 108 yards of total offense. In registering another smothering performance the Tide continued to collect outstanding contributions from numerous players across all three levels of the defense. As predicted, this unit continues to improve and should only continue to do so as DaShawn Hand returns to the line up.

Mini Game balls

Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?

Alabama’s Next Opponent

Next up for Alabama is a much awaited bye week followed by a visit from the LSU Tigers.

Kick After – a ‘lil nugget that didn’t make the show

Saturday after the game we enjoyed a visit with a very special friend whom we affectionately call Bama Joe. Joe and his family are long time Tide supporters who we first met when we joined Tide Pride in the late 90s. Unfortunately Joe is of an age where his health isn’t always cooperative which makes his trips to Tuscaloosa much less frequent, so it’s extra special when we get to spend time in his company.

I think that’s part of what makes college football so special – the friendships and relationships that are fostered across the years around the celebration of a particular team. That certainly is a large part of my Alabama Football experience and if you’re reading this I appreciate you being a part of it too.

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s dismantling of the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Offensive Personality

Alabama continues to flex and demonstrate its personality on Offense and it’s fun to watch. The ball is being distributed around the lot with more efficiency. The ‘right’ players are running the ‘right’ plays. And the play calling is more reflective of film study and anticipation. Tune is as we call out a couple plays that demonstrate just how dialed in the Tide offensive staff was to this game.

Running Back Rotation

We spend a few minutes talking about the new rotation at running back and how that is serving the team so well. We also speculate on a circumstances that impacted our roster management at the position.

Wide Receivers Emerging

There appears to be a clear passing of the torch at the receiver position on this year’s squad. No one is claims Calvin Ridley’s claim as the best receiver on the team just yet, but the next generation of pass catchers aren’t wallflowers either.

Depth at Defensive Line

We’ve speculated all season about the Tide’s depth at the position and appears we’ve finally reached a consensus. Tune and let us know if you agree.

Healthy Pass Rush

Alabama has demonstrated an ability to get after the quarterback this season and this emergence is due in no small part to the returning health, depth, and form at the linebacker position. Check out why we’re pleased with this position for now and the future.

Fielding Punts

Possessing the ball has become something of a mantra on the podcast – makes sense as teams can’t score without it. But we’re equally parts bull and bear on that to expect out of the punt return position in the Tides upcoming contest.

Mini Game balls

Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?

Alabama’s Next Opponent

Next up for Alabama is the 100th meeting with the Volunteers of Tennessee.

Kick After – a ‘lil nugget that didn’t make the show

Surprisingly we didn’t spend any time talking about the Hog’s scoring drive near the end of the game. Of course giving up a score is never the objective, but I think this may be an exception. Stick with me.

The defense was comprised of youth and backups, so while any experience is good experience, some experience is great experience. This is the later.

The defense forced Arkansas, who was still playing their starters, into a 4 play goal-line stand before finally allowing the score. The Arkansas drive, to call it such, was largely kept alive by reckless penalties – most notability a pair committed by backup corner Jared Mayden.

But here’s the catch for me. Mayden is likely the future at the corner position next season so the game reps and lessons are critical for his development. It actually reminds me of Dee Milliner seeing some of his first action at corner. He was burned badly for a touchdown against the same Hogs as a true freshman and came back to have an outstanding All America career for the Tide.

While I’m not yet predicting the same heights for Mayden, I think the experience of this drive – including, or perhaps especially, the sting of allowing the touchdown will serve this team well in games and seasons to come.

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s closer than expected win over the Aggies of Texas A&M.

Offensive Misfires

All the elements of recent romps by the Tide were present on Saturday but Alabama wasn’t able to string them all together. The ball distribution was there as 6 different receivers caught passes and at least 3 more were targeted. Big plays were had by Damien Harris and Calvin Ridley. Creativity was also on display in the pivot route for a touchdown by Henry Ruggs.

But credit the A&M’s defense for making it a tough row to hoe. Stout inside and athletic outside, the Aggies disrupted the Tide run and pass games and more than doubled the Tide’s loss yardage stats on the season.

Open Receiver Position

Calvin Ridley is the undisputed number one receiver for Alabama’s passing attack. But who’s ready to step into the breach when called upon?  Who can play the number one role when Cal can’t go?

It’s an easier question to answer in the abstract, but Saturday when Ridley was unable to go after suffering a thigh bruise the theory was put to the test.

Unfortunately Robert Foster had a forgettable sequence that appeared to take his head out of the game. But true freshman Jerry Jeude appeared both willing and able to fill the void in delivering an important 14 yard catch on a field goal scoring drive late the contest.

The jury remains out on who really is the second alpha in the receiver room but Alabama may have an emerging candidate.

Infestation

Isaiah Buggs had a breakout game with a team leading 10 tackles. Buggs had been a staple in the Tide’s Defensive Line rotation all season, but against the Aggies he stepped in for the injured DaShaun Hand and demonstrate why he was the top rated JUCO DL prospect back in the spring.

Sub-Special Teams

Saturday may have been the worst special teams outing for the Tide since the Ole Miss loss in Tuscaloosa in 2015. Most surprising was that JK Scott was the focal point with punts both shanked and blocked.

However, even worse was the cutesy attempt to convert rather than possess a fumbled kickoff by A&M. Had Jamie Mosley simply possessed the ball, the Tide would have certainly opened up a larger lead early in the contest. And we’ve seen how that has faired for opponents in the past.

Mini Game balls

Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?

Alabama’s Next Opponent

Next up for Alabama is a Homecoming celebration as the Tide welcomes the Razorbacks of Arkansas to Tuscaloosa.

Kick After – a ‘lil nugget that didn’t make the show

Last week I enjoyed one of my favorite college modern football traditions. You see, I have a friend with whom I worked back in the late 90s who is an A&M grad. Over the years we’ve remained in contact and we’ve talked or emailed lots of college football talk.

When the Aggies joined the SEC a few years back we started trading reports over our respective teams to help prepare the other for the game – team tendencies, non-headliners to watch, and some predictions on how we might respectively attack the other team.

Last week was a particularly long work week and I put his email off most of the week. But when I finally read it through and started working on my response, it dawned on me how much I enjoyed that annual process and how much I’ve valued keeping in touch with my Aggie buddy over the years.

Oh and here’s a bonus extra point. I predicted this about a year ago.

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s victory over the Ole Miss Black Rebel land Bear Sharks.

Offensive By Design

The Alabama offense under first year coordinator Brian Dabol is a sight to behold. Long has Saban sought an ability to be multiple on offense, to dictate to the defense. But never have we witnessed it brought to bear in the way we are in 2017.

To suggest that the Tide offense is a challenge to defend is an insult to challenging tasks everywhere.

Considering formations ranging from 5 receivers or 2 running backs or 2 Tight Ends or a play making Quarterback, there are 10 skill potential positions to distribute the ball. So far this season, all 10 of those positions have participated directly in the production of offense, and have done so in the person of at least 18 different players so far this season. Meaning Alabama can make a play from any skill position at any time.

Dealing Hurts

Keep your eyes on Jalen Hurts because he is developing right in front of us. Leaning less on the run, staying in the pocket, progressing through his reads, throwing with anticipation, all while remaining calm in the pocket. It’s enough to make your heart grow warm.

You Don’t Know Bama

All the bluster about Saban not having a personality and his sucking the fun out of the game simply serves to identify those not paying attention. If the team swarming Ronnie Clark in celebration of his first touchdown after an injury riddled career isn’t a picture of what’s great about college football then I don’t know what is.

Get’n Defensive

Alabama’s stop squad continues to round into form, and the rest of the league should take notice. While the return of 3 injured linebackers certainly helps, the development of depth along the defensive front is nothing to sneeze at. Tune in to hear the bold expectation we’ve set for this side of the ball.

2017 Alabama vs. Vanderbilt

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down Alabama’s 2017 dismantling of the Vanderbilt Commodores

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores.

This is Alabama Football

This may have been as savage a beating I’ve ever observed. It’s one thing for an Air Raid offense to hang 70 on an undermanned defense but wholly another for a team to pound out nearly 500 yards on the ground. The 181 receiving yards, while delicious, were not necessary.

Check out the podcast where we step through the components of this beat down – outstanding play by the line, another outstanding display of ball distribution, and some impressive individual performance – plus, the one play we continue to hate.

The Kids will be A’ight

The 2017 recruiting class is certainly making is presence known. A near record number of true freshman have seen the field and at times on Saturday the announcers could hardly call a play without signaling out yet another big play attributed to a newcomer.

The highlight remains Tua’s amazing escape and touchdown pass to fellow freshman DeVonta Smith, which is a play for the ages. But contributions were also made by Najee Harris, Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, Brian Robinson and too many others to name. The future looks bright.

Flaming Red Shirts

Of note were the three freshmen who saw their first action of this season. Of course the significance here is that they burned their redshirt making this season of year of exhausted eligibility. Falling into this category were RB Brian Robinson and TE’s Major Tennison and Kedrick James. Check out the podcast to get our reaction and prediction as to this promises to help the Tide in more ways than one.

Defense Rounding to Form

Alabama welcomed three injured players back onto the field on Saturday, all linebackers. Not that the Tide defense needed any additional spark, but getting these players back informed a deeper rotation and more aggressive pass rush from the front seven.

Mini Game balls

Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?

Alabama’s Next Opponent

Next up for Alabama is something of a grudge match with Ole Miss returning to Tuscaloosa. Heads up Rebels, this one is a trap.

Kick After – a ‘lil nugget that didn’t make the show

I was fully expecting the upstart Commodores to put up a fight for the half of action. I believe Derrick Mason has elevated their program and they are heavy with talented upperclassmen. In my reading prior to the game I had stumbled upon a great nugget that I was eager to bring to the show, again with the expectation that it was close at half with the Tide pulling away late.

See, Vanderbilt practices in the mornings, so that the time conflicts less with classes and it serves as a deterrent against any late night shenanigans. But, that means they practice less in the heat of the day, and in what ended up being a 90+ degree day…. Well, I expected that to make for a compelling talking point. Turns out Alabama had other plans for Vanderbilt and the Commodores practice schedule was not going to matter one way or the other.

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s victory over the Colorado State Rams.

Hurts Development

Progress is incremental and such is the development of young Jalen Hurts. Against the Rams, Hurts completed better than 70% of his passes for 248 yards, 2 touchdowns and 0 turnovers. That’s winning football.

Along the way, he hit big plays down the field and a connected on a brilliant check-down when his primary target was covered. He still has a tendency to tuck the ball and run a tick or two ahead of when he should, his first touchdown run is a good example, but it’s hard to outright blame his reliance on such profound skillset.

Offensive Diversity

Equally as intriguing is the Tide’s diversity on offense and should you question the postulate feel free to take our litmus test – how would you want to stop the Tide’s offense if you were an opposing defense?

Alabama connected with 8 different receivers on Saturday including 3 running backs and a Tight End. Calvin Ridley may be one of the most explosive receivers in the college game and Robert Foster demonstrated blazing speed on the other side. Further, Alabama has connected with 3 talented freshmen receivers on the season.

Meanwhile, Alabama still features a power running attack with 4 backs poised to break off long runs at any time. And on top of it all, the Tide’s most dynamic and electric runner may be its quarterback.

Give it another couple weeks to jell, and we may be looking at one of the more dynamic offenses in the game.

Linebacker Depth and Rotation

Colorado State found success attacking Alabama in the middle of the defense, and it should be neither a surprise (we predicted CSU might score 17), nor a cause for panic. That Alabama is down 5 linebackers and is still able to field a formidable unit is of note. That 3 of the missing ‘backers are slated to return to practice this week is a reason a reason for optimism.

Mini Game balls

Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?

Alabama’s Next Opponent

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs.

Hurts Runs Wild

Apparently Fresno didn’t get the memo that the best bet for success against the Tide is to shut down Jalen as a runner and force him to beat you with his arm. Instead it seemed the fighting Joe Tedford’s did just the opposite and allowed Hurts plenty of running opportunities.

Ball Distribution

In an upgrade over game one, the Tide distributed the ball to 11 different receivers and Tide fans will be especially pleased that this distribution included 2 tight ends and 3 running backs. Add in Alabama’s All America caliber receiver leading the way with 5 receptions and a freshman receiver catching his first touchdown and nearly no stone was left uncovered.

Game Objective

Make no mistake, this game was about Alabama working on Alabama, and Saban said as much in his post gamer. Offensive development is incremental so plenty of work remains but it was a glimpse into what the Tide might become.

Linebacker Replacements

If for no other reason you have to tune into the podcast for our take on the linebacker play in light of 4 players being out at the position. This breakdown includes emerging stars, legacy favorites, eager freshmen and steady contributors carving out roles.

Defensive Potential

We also talk about the upside that remains for this season’s stop squad, which is impressive considering how well they have already played.

Mini Game balls

After the game I hung around in the stands to let the crowd filter out and to catch Saban’s postgame press conference. During the wait I struck up a conversation with a gentleman picking up ticket stubs. As it turns out Da’Ron Payne was featured on the ticket and the gentleman in question was Da’Ron’s grandfather.

The elder Payne was incredibly friendly and was clearly proud of his grandson. We talked about Da’Ron’s contributions to the team and he shared his perspective on how much Payne had matured as a player.

The ticket stubs were for family and friends back home who are all equally as proud of Da’Ron.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down Alabama’s 2017 season opener against Florida State

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s victory over the Florida State Seminoles.

Scoring the Offense

We step through an exercise where we try to allocate responsibility for the offense’s less than stellar performance. Was it play calling, Jalen’s development, or Florida State’s potent defense? The answer across the board is a resounding yes.

Line Play

We discuss the playing rotation, or lack thereof, including one of the first moves we expect to see over the coming weeks.

Rookie Contributors

Alabama’s 2017 recruiting haul was quite impressive and many of these youngsters are already making their mark across all phases of the game. Of note is the number of youngsters inserted into key game time situations.

Linebacker Depth

Alabama suffered an unprecedented run of injury to the linebacker corps. Fortunately this was previously a deep position but tune in as we explore options for addressing the emerging needs.

Secondary In the Air

Alabama has a nice if underrated collection of candidates at the corner position. The Tide also boasts one of the best and most versatile secondary players in the country, which we don’t want to see moved to corner. Check out how both statements are true and are likely to remain that way if Alabama is to make a run for the title.

Mixed Bag Special Teams

Alabama’s Special Teams contributed both frustration and exhilaration to the proceedings Saturday night. The jury remains out as to what the Tide really has here.

Heart of a Champion

It was only week one, but tune in to hear how the Tide demonstrated the heart, toughness, and resolve that Saban is in constant search of.

Mini Game balls

Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?

Alabama’s Next Opponent

Next up for Alabama are the Fresno State Bulldogs in the Tides 2017 home opener in Tuscaloosa.

Kick After – a ‘lil nugget that didn’t make the show

I enjoy how Saban fields as many as 18 defenders coming out of timeouts or play stoppages. As with most things Saban related, its more about efficiency than it is cleverness. The Alabama defense is versatile and rotates lots of players. More than simply leaving the offense guessing, the ploy is about having all player combinations available and ready, then removing the pieces not required.

Its smooth and fluid, and if a little bit clever then so be it.

Well, in a gesture of gamesmanship, FSU coach Jimbo Fisher, who coached with Saban at LSU, had his own answer. In like kind situations, Fisher allowed only his five linemen to take the field leaving unknown combinations of skill players to follow.

While the Tide never appeared impacted by the ploy, it provided a clever response and one that surely Saban respected.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down the 2017 Alabama Recruiting Class

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s haul on National Signing Day 2017.

The Improbability of it All

Trees do not grow to the sky. There is a way about things, a natural order, a limit. That is unless the sapling in question was planted in Tuscaloosa a decade ago by master arborist Nick Saban.

Only a few short years ago Alabama set a record for pulling in the second and then the third consecutive top ranked recruiting class. When Saban started to showcase his recruiting skills a surprisingly few programs could boast three consecutive top 10 classes.

Now Saban is just showing off, running laps around the recruiting competition with his 7th consecutive top ranked class. Oh, and according to one service, his highest ranked class while patrolling the sidelines in Bryant-Denny.

Breaking Down the Class

With 26 signees, 12 early enrollees, 2 Blue Shirts, and even a 4-star Gray Shirt, the story of this class is already legend.  Add in the 3 years invested in its assemblage and the 3-5 years in which most of these Crimson careers will play out and it is easy to agree that this plot line has many chapters yet to tell.

But that didn’t stop the intrepid AFP team from putting our spin on the freshly minted class.  We predict our day one contributors, career all-stars, and x-factors. Further, we identify position battles that will burn hot this spring with promises for lasting impacts across the playing rotation in the fall.

The Future is Next

In January, Alabama fell to Clemson on the biggest stage the sport has to offer. In today’s headlines-trump-facts environment, that portended the collapse of the Alabama dynasty.

However, to take that position is ignore facts that Stevie Wonder can see spring from the page.

By Saban standards, the Tide fielded a young team while continuing to develop a stockpile of talented youngsters who have not yet broken into the rotation.  Add to the mix a talented and diverse 2017 class and it does not look like Alabama is going anywhere any time soon.

The 2016 Alabama football team fell to Clemson in what some are calling a historic game, ending this Tide squad’s bid at becoming an all time great. But what did we learn watching the play unfold in Atlanta?

With each passing week we’ll learn more about the 2016 Crimson Tide squad.  We’ll spot trends as they emerge and puzzle at both the positive and negative outliers throughout the Alabama Football season.

In this weekly feature I’ll highlight a handful of the lessons this team is teaching me.

Funny Taste

One morning just over a week ago I woke up and started looking for the monkey that shit in my mouth.  How else to explain the funny taste? All these days later and still no sign of that monkey. My wife has taken to suggesting I have issues with denial. And she’s wrong.

While I’ll concede that my monkey tale may be farfetched, I haven’t yet heard a better explanation.

Don’t Take Our Bo

It’s hard to put a fine point on this without sounding like sour grapes. Or worse, like a Texas fan circa 2010.

Had Scarbough not gone down with a broken leg, Alabama beats Clemson by at least two scores.

Clemson simply had no answer for Bo, who had 2 long touchdown runs and singled handedly out rushed Clemson before suffering a broken leg in the 3rd quarter.

Absent its power back, Alabama shifted its attack and proved unable to sustain drives.

Depth Watch

I both love and hate the irony of the depth story line. Again and again we’ve unpacked exactly how thin this Alabama defense really was at several key positions. And without fail the team was able to overcome. Creative formations, emerging youngsters, and timely turnovers all masked a limited second team. This happened with such frequency that the media continued to spin the narrative of Alabama possessing such a deep roster.

With so much bluster it had to be true. Except it wasn’t.

Enter Clemson with its talented roster, elusive and effective passer, and a game plan designed to exploit the Tide’s lack of depth on defense.

Play after play after play the Clemson receivers did two things. They rotated personnel and they took the Tide receivers deep. Add in tempo at key spots and the persistent attack took its toll.

All season long to have raised the flag for depth issues, including and especially in the secondary only to see it unravel in grand fashion on the biggest of stages. Curses.

All Hail Alabama

As disappointing as this loss was for the Tide faithful, it’s no excuse not to celebrate the wonders of the 2016 season. This team may be a near perfect embodiment of the Saban process-based ethos.

Work hard, stick with the program, ignore the scoreboard, avoid distractions, everyone competes.

This squad had it all. Star players sticking around to become super stars, depth players finally earning starting roles, and freshmen being provided a fair shake for playing time, and more.

The 2016 Alabama squad will be a fun one to remember, even if it included some squirrely monkey business in Tampa.

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s victory over the Washington Huskies.

Play Calling

Alabama featured the running game on 80% of its plays against Washington, a surprising total even for fans asking for Lane to run the ball more often.

Personnel Utilization

The semi-final featured the most Dubose-like play that we’ve seen in Saban’s 10-year tenure at Alabama. Tune in to the podcast to see which of our favorite players was involved.

Early Scoring

Check out why the early 7-point deficit was neither a concern nor surprise against the Huskies.

Drive Start

One of Saban’s favorite mantras was on full display Saturday night as Washington started 8 possessions inside their 20-yard line.

Affecting the Quarterback

Another Saban favorite was on display as the Tide defense harassed Washington’s Jake Browning all night long. However, despite 5 sacks, 2 ints, and countless hurries Browning did avoid sharing his frustration to the national viewing audience, unlike Conner Cook last year.

Lane Out, Sark In

I’m glad I don’t sell newspapers for a living because this is the most overwrought and boring story going today. Heck, it was barely even a surprise.

Check out the podcast to hear us explain away all the breathless chatter.

Note – this was recorded prior to most of this week’s post game events.

Play Calling

Yet again, Tom and Dave are pit against opposite ends of the discussion. While there’s amply common ground, there continues to be tension in getting to that common ground. But at least the discussion is fun.

Elephant Package

Speaking of common ground, the short yardage game featuring a big back behind an extra tight end and a pair of defensive tackles moonlighting as fullbacks is always fun to watch.

This package should have a one play minimum every week.

Amazing Defense

We are running out of ways to describe this Alabama defense. Check out what Dave calls it this week and what you can do if you don’t like the analogy.

Depth and Over Reaction

The Tide coaching staff may have over reacted again with Marlon Humphrey being unavailable to go on Saturday. Fortunately this was quickly recognized and corrected.

Versatile Harrison

Check out our breakdown of Ronnie’s performance on a key second quarter play.

Hamilton’s Injury

Tune in as we laud Hamilton’s contributions and how the Tide will adapt to cover for this loss in the remaining games.  Yeah, I went plural.

Where In

Perhaps the worst kept secret all season was Alabama’s seeding with the college football playoffs. We have a little fun with some initial thoughts on the game.

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s defeat of the Auburn Plainsmen.

Play Calling

Familiar lines are drawn as we debate good vs. bad play calling and game planning.

Ardarius Returns

Coincidence that Stewart returns to the lineup and the Tide offense plays with more spark? I think not. Plus Ardarius provides for a snarky jab at the Tigers, tune in to see what we’re talking about.

Solid Line

The Alabama line was stable and stable on Saturday against the Tigers when it registered a solid performance without all of the personnel shifts prevalent over the last month of the season.

Deep Secondary

Alabama goes nine deep in the defensive secondary. Check out the breakdown.

Special Teams

JK was off his mark and we discuss the punt return game including speculation for adding some spark.

Mini Game balls

Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?

Alabama’s Next Opponent

Next up for Alabama is a return visit to Atlanta for the SEC Championship game where the Tide will square off with a familiar opponent relative to the forum. The Crimson Tide and Florida Gators have matched wits for the conference crown 9 times, including Saturday, and have played to a draw in splitting the first 8 appearances. Look for the Tide to take the upper hand in both the game and series come Saturday.

Solo Oh-No

Hold on folks, this is a solo ride with Dave, pure and unfiltered. Can you handle it?

Triple Threat of Question

Alabama rolled out its worst outing since week two and still managed to rack up 31 points. To what and where do we assign fault? Was it play calling, Jalen’s jitters, or an overall malaise settling over Bryant-Denny on a chilly November night? Tune in to see how we break it down.

Ardarius Out

Saturday did not represent the first game Stewart has missed this season but it may well represent the most impactful absence. Check out the show for our assessment of how the absence of Ardarius impacted the offence and who actually benefited by the revised lineup.

Line Work

Last week the Tide went 4 deep at Right Guard. This week, for an encore, the Tide went 4 deep at RG while also going 3 deep at Left Tackle. An impressive display of depth to be sure, but a trend that needs to end.

Conflicted Defense

Was this a good defensive performance or a bad one? Leaving the stadium last Saturday I was convinced of my response but upon review I’m equally as convinced the other way.

Kicking Questions

Lots of questions came out of the kicking game Saturday and we take aim at unpacking them on the show. Check it out.

Mini Game balls

Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?

Alabama’s Next Opponent

Next up for Alabama is a rumble with West Georgia’s finest, the War Plainspeople from Auburn. Call it a tune up for the SEC Championship if you like. The relative health of key players on both sides of the aisle will go a long way towards determining the outcome of this one.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down Alabama vs LSU 2016

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s triumph over LSU.

To Jalen or Not to Jalen

We have some fun bantering the merits of Jalen, and Kiffin, and the aesthetics of Alabama’s offense.

Shades of 2011

We talk through how closely Saturday’s game paralleled the 1 vs 2 matchup in Tuscaloosa in 2011.

Bo Nose

We talk about Bo Scarbrough’s hardnosed running style and how he was poised for an even bigger day against the Tigers had he not suffered a 1st half set back.

Tough Competition

LSU provided Alabama with their toughest contest of the season. We discuss which Tide players may have been the most impacted by this steeper level of competition.

New Safety in Town

Minka looked at home filling in for the injured Eddie Jackson. Thanks to the bye and the nature of the opponent the debut was easier to navigate and we discuss how we’ll continue to keep an eye on this personnel grouping.

Disguising Depth

We spend time discussing the ways the Tide is able to at once manufacture and disguise concerns related to its depth along the defensive front.

Tale of Two Jalens

There’s the passing Jalen and the running, both have skills and both have delivered big plays for the Tide this season. However, one is prone to missing the mark and the other may be slightly over used.  This is a trend to keep an eye on but let’s be clear, there’s a little bit of picking nits here because the Super Frosh has electricity in him.

Howard’s In

OJ Howard was a focal point of the offence with 8 targets, we talk about why we saw more of him in the game vs. prior weeks.

Goal Line Offense

We’re not immune to the rumblings here and we break down some of what we’re seeing. Is this another example of the Tide coaching staff over thinking the situation?

Over TAMU?

Tune in as we explain why A&M was one of our better opponents and how they were in possession of a formula that could have derailed the Tide.

Do You Have Change for a Dime?

Speaking of over reactive coaching… we break down the Tide starting the game in a Dime switching to a Nickel. We illustrate how this is the second time Alabama as eschewed their base for a defensive scheme no so perfectly suited for attacking the opponent’s offense.

Viva Eddie Jackson

We break down how Alabama may elect to rotate personnel in the lineup but we also explain how one does not simply replace Eddie Jackson.

Dakota Ball Kick Return

Hey, you simply won’t hear anyone else talking about it, so why not give it a listen.

Mini Game balls

Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?

Alabama’s Next Opponent

Fortunately the Tide gets a bye this week. Time to rest the lingering aches and devise Eddie-less defensive schemes. With LSU kicking off a four game home stretch, the Tide must remain focused and come out of the gates ready to do work.

Don’t Hurt’em Jalen

We continue our discussion of how Jalen is being utilized in the offense and we even get some bilateral support for most of our play calling.

Running Back Brigade

The running game was on display against the Hogs and almost everyone enjoyed a shining moment. Check out our assessment on what still needs work as we discuss how this unit should play a key role as the season continues to unfold.

Time of Possession Sleight of Hand

The stat lines presented a mixed bag of findings and the Alabama drive charts were down right surprising. Out of 15 possessions, none eclipsed 4 minutes and the longest two possesses failed to result in points. And that’s not all… tune in for more.

Hit and Miss Defense

At once the Tide defense was stingy in allowing only 73 rushing yards and philanthropic in granting 400 passing yards. Did the Tide defensive staff over think – then fail to adjust – the Razorback offensive plan? Check out the podcast for a take we promise you won’t find anywhere else.

Quarterback (Re)Deployment

This threatens or promises to be a weekly topic on the show. In this week’s show we generally approve of the play calling and spend some time discussing how Blake’s transfer may inform how Jalen us utilized moving forward.

Jacobs Continues to Delight

Joshua continues to check off boxes as we suggest Damien may get Wally Pipped.

Ridley’s Believe it or Not

After an all-time day against the Wildcats, check out the discussion suggesting that this was not a best cast for the Tide.

Ronnie Collins

Depth on Defense

As this continues to be the topic that won’t quit, we compare and contrast specific instances in which the Tide leveraged well its available depth vs. others in which starters were pulled back into the field to address performance issues with the subs.

Quarterback Deployment

Jalen Hurts played a big role on Saturday but we discussed how the weight of the game was not thrust on his shoulders. Tom mentions Blake’s success and it was nice to see all four quarterbacks get some run.

Note – this show was recorded before Blake’s big announcement so some of the discussion is now dated.

Running Backs

What a wild mix of running back action, partially due to injuries that, thankfully, are not as bad as they appeared. Check out who really caught our attention and who might be up for another role. We also make some bold predictions about how Alabama may utilize the available depth.

Offensive Line

More shakeup along the offensive line. Probably not such a big surprise but the position remains unsettled. How long can this hold out?

Emerging Fullback

The Tide may be sitting on the solution to some of its woes in the running game. Not one but two players may be poised for action in the hybrid fullback/H-back role made famous by Jalston Fowler.

Wide Receivers

Near injuries, designed targets, and pecking order statements were all front and center on Saturday. Tune in as we break it down.

Depth on Defense

Oh how I hate this as a recurring topic. I hate sounding like Chicken Little on this subject and I’ll hate it even worse if we’re proven to be correct. But for all the breathless headlines breaking down injuries on offense it sure was silent when an All-America candidate tweaks a hammy and is subbed out for a former walk on in the opening quarter. Tune in for more.

Note – Tony Brown’s return was also announced after we recorded so there’s an opportunity that some of our concerns may be addressed.

Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down Alabama vs. Ole Miss 2016

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s roller coaster ride with Ole Miss.

(Not) Everybody Loves Jalen

Jalen Hurts is the toast of Tuscaloosa, if not the conference, if not all of college football. Ok, some dude in the Ville known as Lamar-valous is rightly garnering most of the national acclaim but Jalen isn’t hurting for praise – sorry, had to do it. That is with the exception of one of our old school and sometimes hard to please hosts. Tune in to hear the discussion.

Same As It Ever Was Along the O-Line

Progress happens in steps and Saban is nothing if not the master of process. And so it is that it took two games for the Tide to sort out personnel experiments and exact the necessary levels of discipline in order to restore order and balance to its offensive line. Check out our discussion of the topic and check out when we predicted the shakeup.

Grab Bag at Running Back

Damien Harris has clearly asserted himself as the Tides feature back but the subsequent rotation remains quite fluid. Tune in as we discuss our take on the rotation and how it compares to years past.

Injuries Reveal Depth Woes

Four Tide players we’re pulled from action against the Rebels with varying degrees of ailment. Fortunately, according to reports, all injuries are minor-ish with most players expected to be available for the Tide’s tilt this coming weekend.

However, the rush of players off the field revealed our pet concern – this team isn’t as deep as most fans want to believe. Check out our discussion on the topic and hear how some recent attrition is a contributing factor.

Why Didn’t I Think of That?

Eddie Jackson at punt returning goes together like Uma and Zotty. Check out why we immediately gushed with self-loathing upon seeing line up on Saturday.
